Home Office Design Basics

 

This section is designed to help you get started with your CCDS Home Office Design System™.

 

The basic principle of the Home Office System, as with all our design systems, is to import pre-drawn images to a worksheet and move them as necessary to form a design.  The software has many tools to enable you to put even the most elaborate of designs together quickly and easily.

 

To put a home office design together, you will need to discuss the requirements with your client and work out the sizes you will be recommending, (i.e. dimensions of the units) as you normally would.  You can then start to use your CCDS design software.  Below are some useful suggestions which will help you in the preparation of Home Office Designs.

 

Start with the base units, importing the units you want to depict to the screen (see: How you add an image).  Start a new page for each wall unless the area is relatively small and you have space to fit 2 walls onto the page.  Use the screen rulers (see: How to use the scale rulers) provided at the top and side to help in positioning them which should be slightly below center to allow for any upper units you may need to depict.  The quickest way to maneuver them around the screen is by using your mouse to "drag and drop" them into position (see: How to move an image around the worksheet).

 

When using upper and base unit images, you will notice that the knob on the door appears on one side only.  If you require this image to open from the opposite side, use the Flip Horizontal tool (See How to flip an image horizontally).

 

Once you have your base units in place, next go to the 'Counter-top Images' file and place suitable lengths of counter-top in place.  Now for the upper cabinets if you have some incorporated in your design.  Before importing these, go to the file marked "Measuring Stick" and import that.  It is just a blue and yellow bar, but is scale sized to 18 inches to help you depict a visually correct gap between upper and lower units.  You can also use the images of the monitors to gauge the height of the uppers … it is not as accurate but will suffice if you are putting a design together quickly, (in a client's house, for example).  Now start putting the uppers in place, together with any windows you need to depict … there are images of 2 types of window available and you can re-size them as necessary with the resizing tools (see: How to re-size an image).

  

Now for the finishing touches.  Choose one or two of the items you would normally find in the home office such as the computer monitor and one of the printers depicted.  A scanner and keyboard trays are also depicted.

 

At this point, your design is almost finished.  The images should align quite well by just 'dragging and dropping' (see: How to move an image around the worksheet) them into position but it is always wise to check the alignment.  Increasing the magnification (see: How to increase the magnification) helps to spot any corrections that may be necessary.  One last thing to do is to highlight the 'measuring stick' if you have used it and remove it from the screen (see: How to delete an image). 

 

Your design should now ready, but you can also add text and measurements as necessary (see: How to add text) if you wish to do so by using the 'add text' icon, dragging out the text box and adding sizes or descriptions as necessary.  Another option is to print out the finished design and add sizes and any notes you may wish to by hand which can make for a more personal presentation.
